Materials: 13cm x 13cm square of black paper, whiteboard of 29.7 * 32.5 cm.
Tool: Blade.
One Black Square is an innovative exploration of paper cutting, merging Gestalt design principles with a precise reorganization process. Starting from a single 13cm x 13cm black square, every piece is carefully cut and rearranged on a white mat board without adding or losing any parts—ensuring that, in theory, the composition could be perfectly reconstructed into the original square.
This project features three distinct compositions: FOUR SEASON, representing seasonal transitions through varied lines and shapes; BALLET, illustrating movement, strength, and teamwork in a round-triangle form; and SENSOR ORGANS, emphasizing the interesting symmetry in human.
By pushing the boundaries of traditional paper cutting, One Black Square transforms a simple shape into a dynamic visual puzzle, inviting viewers to engage with perception, reconstruction, and abstract storytelling in a new way.
